Dog Days of Summer

Wow, I can’t believe it has truly been almost a month since I last posted. I am pretty mad at myself for that one. Honestly, life was just so exhausting and busy there for a while and once it slowed down a little the past week or two, I have just been full on burnt out. I am happy to say I am finally, slowly, starting to feel normal again. Hopefully this helps my writers block too. Somehow in the middle of the craziness of June, I lost all control of any daily life planning I had going on. Menu plans, blog plans, event plans, it all just kind of went out the window. On top of the busy schedule, it has truly been unbelievably hot here in St Louis. Maybe this is normal, but I am thinking it is a tad warmer than it usually is for this time of the year. I mean most of June was a heat index of over 100 every single day. July has been shaping up to be either the same horrible heat, or rainy. That is enough to make you dread even checking the mail. Trust me. Because of all of this, I got to thinking… Is there a way to keep up with the blog a little easier, or at least a tad more consistently? Even with a busy schedule? I THINK I may be coming up with a good concept in my head. I am working on the different aspects of it and trying to get it all mapped out so that perhaps I could start as early as next week! I write to keep everyone up to date on our lives, I write as a fun little outlet and hobby for me, and I write to spread the word about things, events, people, businesses, whatever! So, why not work all of that into a more concrete idea that is easier to manage right? We shall see! Time will tell!

I don’t want to recap the last month too intensely for anyone. This post would be forever long! I will post photos from some of my favorite experiences over the last month to summarize most of it, but in a nutshell we got to enjoy Fathers Day weekend with Kaci back in Indiana, I stood by my best friend as she married the love of her life, and was uber surprised at a phone call from her a week later telling me she just took a pregnancy test… and it was positive (yay!)! We went canoeing down the Meremac River down at Meremac Caverns and enjoyed some bonding time just the two of us, and we enjoyed a work party for Adam that allowed us to get out and mingle with new people and I finally got to spend some time at our pool. Whew! We will round out July with Adam doing an irrigation installation for a friend and coworker of mine down here, then picking Kaci up and going to my work summer cookout down at Grants Farms here in the city, before heading off to a family vacation in Gatlinburg (a loooooong overdue one!) and meeting up with my parents and brother and his family! And finally, heading back to Indiana to celebrate that my sister got married in Jamaica last month! 🙂  Man, when I put it all down in words like that I am already exhausted again. Never a dull moment here at the Howard Homestead!

Summer Lovin

Woah. June is here. Which for St Louis, apparently means the heat is here. (hello 100 degrees this weekend!) Honestly, I just want to lay by my apartments pool and relax. I figure I don’t know where we will end up next summer (new apartment or house), but it won’t be where we are now, so I might as well enjoy this brand new never swam in before pool while I can. However, sadly, life has been/is so busy right now that I don’t know when I will get a moment or two to sit down, breathe, and enjoy a warm day by the pool relaxing. I love a busy life, I strive on a busy life, but it has been so long since it has been THIS busy for me, I almost don’t know how I am handling it so calmly right now.

My little Mallie joined t ball this year and apparently grew up over night. Gosh I love her so.

In a nutshell, so many events are taking place over this summer that from Memorial Day on we will be spending 7 weekends traveling back home, one weekend at home followed by another 2 traveling again. That is enough to exhaust anyone! Don’t get me wrong, no complaints on seeing family and friends that much – I truly love spending time with everyone, but like I said, it has been a while since life has been this hectic.

Kylee, my best friend, is getting married on the 25th and this weekend is her bachelorette party. I kid you not when I say I am living in a real life bachelorette party factory pretty much. My amazing Adam has done so well with not complaining, just indulging in my crafts and all my planning, acting as if he cares about it almost as much as I do. But, I know he will be happy when I don’t have our bed littered with crafts all evening long after this weekend and he can actually lay down in it before 10 PM to relax whenever he wants. 🙂 Between crafts for that, other things I am making and working on, I am in full Martha Stewart mode! I love it, my bank account, not so much.

Work has been absolutely nuts. I traveled to Kansas last week to visit our local office there and give some training. It was nice to visit, meet some people face to face I often only speak to via the computer or phone calls. But, I have been playing catch up ever since I feel like. It gets hard when half of the people I work with and need answers from live in other states and countries and the communication lags. Sometimes I wish I could work like half days on St Louis time, half days on Pune India time. Or 6 and 2 or really anything! But I truly feel like I have learned so  much recently that I didn’t anticipate knowing and learning, and that lately I have noticed I really have grown in my role, it feels nice to feel a little more accomplished than I had been feeling there for a while.

My handsome and supportive guy and I at the zoo

My sister had her bridal shower last weekend. It was nice to get to see her and my soon to be brother in law one last time before they get married.  Before anyone asks why I won’t be there, the wedding is out of the country, just them, and the same day as Kylee’s. Their celebration is actually in July for their wedding. On the same note, it was so nice to also get to see some of my extended family. I don’t see many extended family members these days, but I see my dad’s side the least. I would say it has probably been almost a couple years for some of them, which is a long time seeing as how when my grandmother was still alive we got together for every single holiday. Literally, every single one. The other good thing about the shower was that it was held at a local restaurant and I finally got to curb one of my cravings for some local Indiana food that I love. One place down, like 4 more to go! (Looking at you, Tomato Bar, Hacienda, Ben’s Pretzels and Rolling Stonebaker!) I finished off the day by going to a movie with my mama, just her and I. It has been so long since we got to do that and it was so enjoyable. What did we watch you ask? Oh, just Me Before You. *sigh And, I loved it! No truly, I really did. I ugly cried all over again. And, had to stop myself from continuing to ugly cry even after the movie ended. I don’t want to say much or give away anything but let’s just say, they did a great job at following the book. They of course had to leave things out for time reasons, but what they did put in the movie, followed the book, which was refreshing cause you better not try and mess with my Will and Lou!

Over Memorial Day weekend we got to spend some time at home in Indiana with our families and friends, and Kaci. It was so nice to be able to see her again as it has been a little longer than we usually like due to work hours in the spring. But, dang that girl seems to grow every single time we say goodbye and hello again. She can stop now, any time, that is fine. A fun cookout at Adam’s parents with his siblings and the kids and his grandparents and everyone was so nice. The weather was perfect for a summer cookout and the kids were just so excited to finally be able to wear bathing suits and play in sprinklers and get in the crazy cold pool. My family does an annual cookout at my brothers every year, although it involves more than just my family- we are talking his family friends, church friends, my sister in laws family, a little of both of our extended family. It is always a yard full of people and dozens upon dozens of kids just running around everywhere. But, it is tradition, and I look forward to that tradition every single year, even if it means that some years like this one, I can’t stay as long because I have to come back home for work the next day.

We also recently got to enjoy another visit from Adam’s sister Allie and her husband and their son, Brantley. We love when they come to visit us. It is always so nice to go out and explore and do fun things when people come to town and it helps when both Adam and I have someone to kind of bounce things off of the other might not be interested in. Adam can talk cars, hunting, and beer with Andrew. Allie and I can talk, well, everything else under the sun because we are women and you would expect nothing less, shop and just bond over anything and everything. And then we have Brantley who is always a riot and so stinking funny you just want to squeeze him. This visit we finally got to take them down the Zoo for a visit! My company actually matches donations there so I was able to pay half price for a membership and they pay the other half, and this gives us all kinds of perks. The zoo is already free, but parking, tickets to extra exhibits and rides, and discounts on things is included with this. It was a day full of waiting, waiting in traffic to park, waiting for the train, waiting waiting waiting… but, it was still so much fun to all be together, we even enjoy just waiting together we found out, and not many people are lucky enough to have others in their life that make waiting in line so much fun. I am pretty sure it was all worth it for everyone though the moment Brantley got to ride the train he talked about riding for days. ❤

Train trip!

Don’t worry, picture overload will happen of all our exciting things going on this summer, I am sure. And I am going to attempt to get myself on an actual schedule for posting, instead of just having a goal of so many a week/month. Maybe with an actual schedule, there will be some consistency and I can start broadening my writing topics again to include more random posts on random things. My brain is long over due for that type of therapeutic outlet. Until then, in the words of both Dory, and my mother, I will “just keep swimming” through this crazy thing called life.

Flying by!

Wow! It has actually been a fairly busy week and a half here! I can’t believe there is only a week left in March even. Normally, I would be begging for it to hurry up and get over with because in Northwest Indiana, the weather is way more temperamental than here in Missouri. Still temperamental, just not near as extreme levels of cold- but more extreme warm temps. Which is always good news for us, the warm weather coupled with the time change and longer daylight we have been getting has been good for me to feel a little more motivated in areas of life. Still in search of even more motivation, because I am always feeling like my need to do list and my want to do list is never ending- but hey, I’ll take these small improvements March already brought us!

Adam has been in his new job for a couple of weeks now. He seems to enjoy it too, which I am happy to see. I think it is different than anything he has done before, but that could be a good thing too. Besides, he is living up to his nickname from my brother now, Big Fancy, because he is all fancy with the company vehicle and phone and business cards and all that jazz. It makes me happy to see him happy with it. And who  knew irrigation was so technical and there was so much to learn?! I mean seriously, I read some of the stuff he brings home and it is way more technical than I ever really considered it being so kudos to him for understanding and successfully doing this job because I look at something and find myself saying “yeah… I have no idea…” 🙂

Chilly day at the zoo

We had company last weekend! Tam and the girls came to visit for the weekend and even if it was a quick trip, it was still nice to have them there. I don’t see them nearly as often as I would like, so a couple days together did some good! Of course whenever we have company it seems the 75 degree days hurry up and leave and the 45 degree days come in. Nevertheless, we didn’t let that stop us. We went to the zoo (yes, another trip to the zoo- and we STILL have yet to see the whole thing! That place is huge!) and then the St. Louis Science Center. It was so fun! I already knew that we enjoyed the zoo because well, we are animal lovers and always enjoy zoos, plus we had been there already but only saw a smaller other section before leaving. But the science center surprised me. I had a feeling I would like it, and I had a feeling the older two of the girls would enjoy themselves there too as it was a lot of interaction, and I am happy I was right! It surprised me that the littlest liked it as much as they did, but I guess when there are all kinds of things to play with and not worry about breaking- what is not to love!? (Bonus! Both places are free to go to here for anyone) I kind of did not like science all that much in high school. Okay, that is lie… I actually did like it depending on the subject and-basically just until Chemistry was introduced and then I was miserable. (Rest easy Mrs. Keller, I always enjoyed your class quite a bit!!)So walking around the science center was interesting to me because I could see it all from an adults eyes. I had went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago multiple times since high school, and I enjoyed that as well… but, here in St. Louis it is just way more interactive, and I felt like you learn more too. We did math puzzles (man, Mr. Gappa would be SHOCKED to know I did math willingly!), extracted bones, extracted DNA, various science experiments, learned about the different eras on Earth, etc. I actually can’t wait to go back!

Aside from that, I have just been busy getting prepared for my best friends bridal shower and Easter- both this weekend. That sure does keep a girl busy! I am so excited to see her, since this is longest we have went without seeing each other since like… we were 19 and in our freshman year of college. Luckily, we have a pretty close relationship and it is pretty easy for us to always make sure to stay in touch and talk almost every day. But, there is still nothing like actually seeing each other for the first time in a while- and to celebrate such an awesome thing makes it all the sweeter! I can’t give too much away just yet, everything has been kept a surprise to her basically so far and I don’t want to ruin it with just a few days to go! But, I can’t wait to share everything next week! 🙂

Just another cloudy hike in Missouri

In other news, Adam and I have started going on hikes a little more often through the conservation areas down here. There is literally SO much history, so much wildlife and endless amounts of hiking and walking trails that with all this nice weather we get- we might as well take advantage of it, right? I am also going to attempt to get back in the habit of us having a date night every so often. I have realized since moving here, we don’t do that too often. Sure, we go on a hike, or we go grocery shopping together, run errands, order take out, very randomly go to a quick dinner down the road… things like that… but we don’t do much in the way of date nights. I want to get more creative with it too though and not just rely on my usual dinner and a movie, or just movie, or just dinner. I mean, I LOVE doing that, but sometimes it is nice to change it up a bit. As always, I am open to ideas?! The opportunities out here are pretty endless so if you suggest it, I am sure I could find a way to make it work. That is one of the things that never gets old living in such a big area now… that. and take out. 🙂

BIG happy anniversary wishes to my parents. I love you guys so much!

March Madness

I am THRILLED to finally say it is March! I cannot wait until the weather is a steady temperature above 60 degrees consistently. Living in Missouri I have found that it will probably happen a lot sooner than it would if we were still in Northwest Indiana so bring.it.on.

I have some projects I really want to work on but I need to be able to open windows and our deck door to air the apartment out as I work and when it is too cold, not only do I not have the motivation but I couldn’t even begin to convince myself to get the motivation because I would freeze with the doors open for hours! So, needless to say, I am eager to begin on them now. (Don’t worry- I will post photos later of the before and afters) On top of that, being able to get out and do things will be so nice again. St Louis is very much an outdoor city. A lot of the really cool things to do in the city or in surrounding areas are all outdoors. Which hey, I love. But, it also makes it next to impossible to do anything fun then in the wintertime. I also want to start finding hiking areas around here to begin hiking a little and enjoying the nature we have around here.

Adam has been itching to fish and finally started going and exploring more areas this week. I am happy he can tolerate cold more than me, (in fact he loves it) so he has been getting in touch with the country in him again a little bit. Makes us feel a little more at home too when he can do those things.

Missing my best friend and our nonstop laughs when together extra much lately.

Aside from our usual day to day events (work, home, dinner, clean, errands, tv shows) nothing exciting has really been going on. But, that is okay for now. Come time in a couple weeks I know life will start to pick up a little more and get busy again so I am enjoying the downtime. I have my best friends bridal shower Easter weekend and leading up to it I am going to be busy finalizing things, ensuring we are good to go on the details and getting myself excited! This is followed by an event practically every single weekend until her wedding June 25th. (Not all of the events are for her, should probably clear that up) And on top of that, I am really trying to find time to have a weekend getaway for us or something- even something small. My mind is begging for a break and a few days away and it has been way too long for myself.

Talk about going non stop! But, living so far away is making it difficult to attend every single thing so I have a feeling in the next couple of weeks we are going to have to pick and choose what we can attend. That is a first for me, and sure to take some getting used to. Speaking of getting used to, I am trying to practice patience a little more. I know Big Easy knows what he is doing up there, and there is a plan, but sometimes, when things in life seem to be stagnant and not moving forward, I get a little antsy and want to see more results. It is a flaw, a human flaw, but a flaw none the less. So, I am learning that I need to just breathe, not get caught up in everything happening all at once all the time. The things we are working for and towards, the things we want, they will happen in time. I just have to have faith. ❤

“Trust the process. Enjoy the Ride”

Because it is a new month this means I can give you an update on a couple of monthly things I said I would be posting so this week I will focus on writing an entry regarding the books I read in February- yes, books. I found time in my life last month to read more than one and it felt AMAZING to be able to sit there and do so. 🙂 However, I will go ahead and add in my Monday Mantra’s for this post and show you what kind of good vibes I had been putting out 🙂

In Case You Were Wondering…

Wow… It has been over 2 weeks since my last post. I don’t even know how that happened. That is just life I guess. In fact, now that I think about it, I haven’t been too talkative in general over these last couple of weeks. I suppose I never noticed it before now, but even the amount of conversation I carry with others has decreased and I have just had less to say. I am still blaming it on the weather. 🙂 I know the groundhog didn’t see his shadow, and that February is not even over with yet- but come on spring! I am getting tired of waiting on you. Although, I say this knowing full well that St Louis gets extremely hot, and I don’t particularly love very hot weather either. I just like warm. I will gladly take months and months of warm weather. Leave the cold, leave the hot. Just perfect temps in the upper 60’s and low 70’s, please.  But, in case you were wondering how life has been for us…

I believe on my last post I mentioned how  my friends were coming to visit- and they did! We had a nice weekend together going to dinner, shopping, site seeing… all the usual fun things. It was just enjoyable to have company. Naturally they had to come on the coldest weekend we have had yet here in St Louis. But, with those two, it is always fun no matter what the temps are.

I’ve gone country… well, at least started to. 😉

Valentines Day has come and gone now as well! My oh my! I have never been a huge celebrator if the day but I  don’t mind giving in a little to the celebration and idea of the day. Adam knows the way to my heart so naturally he got me food. And by food I mean an extremely overpriced edible arrangement. But, it was delicious so while it may have been the most expensive fruit I have ever had, I enjoyed every piece of it! (Next time we just might chose our own “Valentines Day” to celebrate and save the enormous up charges that day brings. We also celebrated by going to the ro-de-o! Okay, it was PBR (professional bull riding), but that is close to the same thing right?! I knew Adam had been wanting to go for a very long time and heard they were coming to St Louis so I figured, why not?! I love trying new things and it is his little taste of country in the city so it was worth it in my eyes. But then… I went… and I loved it. No seriously, I LOVED it! I am pretty sure I would go on a regular basis if they were always in town. We did not see any major injuries, falls or bulls going nuts. But, we still had a great time and both agreed it was worth the tickets and driving in the crappy weather that morning to get there and we will go back. Hey at this point, I am even starting to have my favorites already.

Last weekend we went home for a very last minute surprise trip. Adam had an unexpected weekend off, so we figured we might as well take advantage of it since he found out he could get Kaci that weekend and so we packed the car up, loaded ourselves and Lucy into it and left behind the mid and upper 70 degree weather we were having and drove back to good ol Indiana. It was a nice trip home. I don’t usually manage to get time with everyone in, but somehow on this trip I did. We enjoyed time with both of our families both together and separate and even had some time to visit with a friend or two. I had an afternoon with my mama to go to Baileys (because living so far a way sometimes you actually MISS that place funny enough- but I remembered why I hate being there on Saturdays!), Adam finally got to go fishing for a bit with a friend and to breakfast and I enjoyed a girls night at the movies and visiting one of my best friends to see the new house her and her husband just bought. Plus, it was Adam’s mom’s birthday too so the last minute trip ended up being an even better idea by the end of the weekend!

First photo of all 5 of the cousins.

Other than our last 2 busy weekends, life has been pretty normal aside from Adam’s job change. He is taking a new position with a different company in the area. I honestly don’t know much on the details side of it currently so I can’t really say anything about it until I learn more. However, he is in classes this week and begins mid next week working for this irrigation company. It was sad seeing him leave Plaza as I know he loved the people there but, as we all know, we have to do whats best for us in the long term and this new position has more room for growth and is more of a position Adam can grow with and into long term. It came up rather quickly and caught us off guard but after discussing it we both decided it was worth taking a shot at it and digging into the opportunity. We could really use some prayers so that the transition is pretty painless for us both as it is going to be different for me too even.  I am eager to know what his work schedule will be like and what to expect though so I can get back to planning some exciting stuff for us to do in the upcoming warm months! We do have a few projects we want to work on inside the apartment also as the weather breaks and his job gets off and running. It is kind of funny, I didn’t feel like February was lasting too long until the last couple of weeks with all the changes and events going on. Now, I feel as if it is dragging by! My to do list is never ending both at home and at work (although I am NOT complaining), so you would think one is busy, time flies by. Apparently that is not the case for yours truly.

I am trying to pray for patience and peace in my mind because I hate feeling anxious. And anxious is exactly how I have been lately. Waiting for this. Counting down for this to happen. Wanting that. Sorting this out and planning that. It truly never ends. After a while it feels as if I am just wishing everything away (except cold weather- I will wish that away all day) and not really present in the moment as much as I would like to be. I really need to focus even more on it and just give my mindset and everything on it over to God and let Him do the work. I know He has it handled and the control freak in me just needs a bit of a break at this point! I am trying to unwind more by focusing on time away from my phone a little bit everyday, time away from electronics and just unplugged from the world. I am trying to quiet my mind and relax more often- if that is in the car driving in silence, or taking a bubble bath and enjoying my own at home spa time. I am always open to new ways to let things go and relax a little though. How do you like to ease your mind and let yourself breath? What are your go to methods for relaxing? I would love to hear!

My sweet Jovie girl got first place at her science fair! I miss that face every single day, but I am such a proud auntie!

Meet Me in St Louis

One way that I have really made sure to get myself more excited for this move is to constantly look into what is available to do and occurs in the area we will be moving to. It is a nice way to know that even though I am leaving the comforts of “The Region”, there are still plenty of things to experience in St. Louis that will keep my adventurous spirit at ease and Adam and I will remain interested in living life rather than just earning a living.

I figured why not share some of these bucket list items with you guys?! I mean, if I am being totally truthful, part of me is probably hoping this causes our loved ones to say “Hey that sounds so cool! We should come visit you guys and experience that together!”. I mean, hey, it can’t hurt to try and use all means available to state why you should visit us right? Plus, it will be nice to constantly revisit this list as an ongoing way to hold ourselves accountable for experiencing new things. None of these items are in any particular order of course because that would stress me out too much naturally. 🙂 Also, just to note: I did not add The Arch on the list as we have both done that on our original house hunting trip in August!, but we are more than willing to go back with anyone interested!

I am certain I will be adding to this list over time, as well as checking off items on the regular. But, I think 40 to do items is a pretty good start if you ask me! If any of you have suggestions that are not listed, I would LOVE to hear them, these are only the tip of the iceberg.
